Sutton Hoo through the ages

Tranmer House, Sutton Hoo, Woodbridge, Suffolk

from the twilight of the Roman empire to the Norman conquest

A mini multi-period living history weekend.

A weekend of mini multi-era displays and entertainments at world famous Sutton Hoo , staged on behalf of the National Trust . Enjoy living history, combat and have a go activities designed to place this fascinating Dark Age burial site within its historical context. Meet C5th Romans and early Germanic invaders, King Raedwald and his C7th warriors, C8th-11Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, and C11th Norman conquerors - far more interested in carving out their new kingdom with the sword and extorting taxes than looking back to Sutton Hoo's glory days as a royal burial ground.

See early Saxon burial rites recreated, enjoy an extremely entertaining interactive display about invasions, raids and migrations from Roman to Norman times, have a go at Saxon calligraphy, and stand well back during combat displays! Take one of the guided tours of the burial mounds, meet historical experts, and let the kids loose on the children's activities!

The line up of top performers includes Ancient Wisdom , the End of the Roman Age Society , Hands on History, Paul Mortimer , The Household , Ormsgard Dark Age Theatre , Ousekjarr , and Wulfingas .

Living history groups and other performers interested in taking part in this and our our events are invited to contact us for further details and click the link for our Standard terms and conditions for participation.
