Step back to 1471.
To visit Tewkesbury Medieval Festival is to step back
in time to 1471 - the year of the famous Battle of Tewkesbury, when
the crown of England was won and lost on fields outside this small
market town. Now in its 22nd year it is the largest event of its
kind in Europe and attracts enthusiasts from all over the world.
Last year they travelled from California, Poland, Germany and Holland
as well as all over the UK Around 2000 of them will take part in
a spectacular re-enactment of the battle, with 3000 more camp followers,
including wives and children, living the life of an army on the
move, throughout the weekends. Visitors are welcomed into the camps,
where the re-enactors are happy to talk about the role they play
and the equipment they use. There is also a large market, with stalls
supplying everything needed to re-create a medieval life style, from
a full suit of armour to a lace to fasten a gown, whilst others
cater more for the general public, with herbs, sweets, clothes and
countless other delights. Entertainment will continue throughout
the day, with music, jugglers, story tellers, and displays of combat.
There is also a large and well stocked beer tent and a range of
caterers, including a pig roast and an organic, vegetarian restaurant.
The fair opens at 11am and closes at 6pm. on both days. The battle
takes place at 4pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday. Entrance is free,
but do expect to be accosted by costumed bucket rattlers - who are
trying to help cover the costs of staging this large scale and spectacular
event.
