Clumber
Park in the age of elegance
Clumber
Park, Worksop, Nottinghamshire
Free admission (free parking for National Trust members, £4.50p
per car non-members)
C18th living history, displays and entertainments to mark the 300th
anniversary of the founding of Clumber's park.
A hugely enjoyable weekend of entertainments alongside Clumber Park's
picturesque lake, staged on behalf of the National Trust. Enjoy
music and song, fashion talks (and a chance to dress up in the latest
C18th creations), meet finely dressed gentry and their servants,
and watch precision displays of drill, musket and cannon firing
by superbly smart soldiers seeking to recruit you into King George's
army. Decide who you'd vote for in a distinctly dodgy (but hilarious)
election husting, see displays of duelling with swords (and maybe
even help out a bit!), marvel as the famous Battle of Blenheim is
recreated with flowers and other unusual props, and laugh, cheer
and shout to Mr Punch versus George Washington. Take time to stroll
through the beautiful grounds too - but be careful, as dastardly
highwaymen will be lurking in the grounds, hiding from the redcoats
but ready to pounce on the unsuspecting!
Great fun for everyone, irrespective of age! To make the most of
a wonderful weekend, why not come in period costume (they'll be
prizes for the best on show)?
Performers include Ancient Wisdom, The Association of Crown Forces
1776, The 47th Regiment of Foot, Griffin Historical, Hands on History,
Hautbois musicians, History Horse, Lord Orkney's Regiment and Stand
and Deliver.
Living history groups and other performers interested in taking
part in this and our our events are invited to contact us for further
details and click the link for our Standard terms and conditions
for participation.
Visiting Clumber Park
Visit the National Trust's web pages about Clumber Park to find
out more about this beautiful C18th landscape property, which comprises
of over 3,800 acres of peaceful woods, open heath and rolling farmland
with a superb serpentine lake at its heart and the longest avenue
of trees in Europe. Part of Nottinghamshire's famed "Dukeries",
Clumber was formerly home to the Dukes of Newcastle (the house being
built in 1770 but demolished in 1938). Many features of the estate
remain including an outstanding Gothic Revival chapel and walled
kitchen garden with spectacular glass houses growing old varieties
of vegetables. The stable yard houses a well stocked National Trust
shop, plant sales area, exhibition and refreshments.
