14. Other ideas not yet classified and Notes

A number of miscellaneous publicity ideas and some general notes that I not found a home for yet.

Radio phone-ins.

There are a number of local radio stations and places like Classic FM which have a sort of "Where are you going this weekend chat" session.

The BBC local stations

Commercial Radio

Listed in the Yahoo directory

Student Radio Association

Hospital Broadcasting Association

Word of Mouth.

This is the best and cheapest form of publicity. Unfortunately this usually takes place after your first successful event. Consider involving local organisations in your event to create interest in the local community in advance of the event.

Signage

Children Free – If you are going to offer this you should put it on the sign at the entrance and on your publicity sources.

Timing

The battle at the end of the day has very few members of the public watching, what a waste. It needs to be earlier but not so timed that those members of the public stream out to get first in the queue of cars. It would also be good to have a quiet space between events so that people could have time to go shopping or visit the living history displays.

Announcements

It would be nice if your announcers would extol the virtues of the traders and the living history displays. They are an important part of your event and serve to entertain the public. And it would be useful if they did not tell everyone to go home or wish them a “safe journey”.

Giants

The Michelham Priory Medieval Fair, Market and Early Music Festival has a drumming group with giants that are very effective. Here are some useful links for the use of giants either in a parade or as school projects.

There are several groups throughout the UK who bring along giant puppets for parades.

You could also encourage the local schools to participate. Here are some ideas on making giants:
