WWII Home Front Re-Creation
Kentwell
Hall , Long Melford, Suffolk.
Mr & Mrs Starkie Bence,
their Family & Friends
Mr 7 Mrs Starkie Bence live at the Hall and due to lack of staff
and there own preference have withdrawn into only a small part of
it. Nevertheless Mrs Starkie Bence usually entertains a few friends
who often include the Rector.
Other Civilians
There may be a sprinkling from Gamekeepers or a PC to Evacuees,
a Spiv to Men from the Ministry to be encountered anywhere.
The Home Guard
The Home Guard (unless the year represented is 1945) will be at
Kentwell on one of their regular exercises. They have become favourites
with our visitors and often compared with the Warmington-on-Sea
section seen in Dad's Army on TV. They will demonstrate their proficiency
(or not) at drill and PT and will be instructed by lectures and
may engage on manouevres which may include a Battle school, which
is near as most Home Guard ever came to fighting. (nb. for events
set in 1945, the Home Guard will not appear, as they were disbanded
in late 1944!)
Civil Defence and Civilian
Service
There should be Land girls working on the Farm with the period tractors
and equipment, WVS, the Auxiliary Fire Service with their fire engines
on practice and likewise ARP Wardens insisting on regular drills.
The WVS should also be on duty provide Tea for the workers.
The Kitchen
This becomes a 1940 kitchen producing much from very little using
as much as possible of produce from the Garden. Although rastioning
ans shortages were not as bad as they were immediately after the
War, they still affected everyone.
