Have a
taste of life at the heyday of the Roman Wall at the northernmost
edge of the Roman Empire . Combining historical integrity with quality
artform activity, this project puts a human dimension to time and
place, experiencing relevant arts and culture directly and aims
to bring history to life in an engaging and accessible manner. T
he event takes place at Walltown in Northumberland, near the village
of Greenhead , on Hadrian's Wall . It is one of the most breath-taking
spots on Hadrian's Wall and is a perfect setting to experience what
life was like over 2000 years ago.
The event
relies upon two groups of key re-enactors - Legio Secunda
Augusta and Silures Celtic tribe. Legio
are particularly relevant to this event due as they present civilian
as well as Roman Army life and bring their full and extensive range
of display units, tents, etc, and army demonstrations. Silures bring
a smaller Celtic encampment and warrior displays to give a sense
of the mix of peoples and cultures at this time and location.
In 2005,
these groups were joined by Eceniron (ironworker, smithy and trader),
Roman Trader (Roman goods) and Rentapeasant (period domestic living).
Craft workshops and demonstrations were expanded to include a Roman
potter with goods, tessarae mosaic, feltmaking and guided storytelling
walks. Other traders included local produce and crafts.
